A wonderful Sunday

June 7, 2009

As I was looking at our empty fridge last night I realized that we seriously needed to go to the grocery store! We usually go back and forth between Costco and Publix but I thought it would be fun to try out the Whole Foods that opened up just a short drive from our house. We sometimes go to another local organic/natural food store called Native Sun but they aren’t open on Sunday – so off we went to Whole Foods.

Instead of grabbing a cart and filling it up with all of the items on our list, we decided to wander around the store and see what all they had. I love to browse through the grocery store when I have time to see all of the yummy, healthy food options that they have including some of the items that my favorite foodie blogs like to eat. After looking all of the delicious foods, C and I decided to grab some lunch. We shared a slice of pizza (that I’d been craving!) and a turkey wrap with sun dried tomatoes. I have to admit that I wasn’t super impressed with either, but that’s what we get for going on the “safe” side rather than choosing some of the other options that they offered. We also had the new baked kettle chips and they were so good! I think my favorite thing about them is how many there are in a serving size – nearly 20 chips (and for only 2 points!). If you know anything about me at all you know that I love salty foods, although I have developed quite the sweet tooth as I’ve gotten older! We finished up our lunch with my favorite part and shared a vegan chocolate chip cookie and an “everything” cookie.

After we finished eating we did our grocery shopping and I finally understood why my friends jokingly call Whole Foods “whole paycheck” – because our bill was nearly $200! Granted, we did get some things that would have made even our normal Publix bill a bit more than normal but gracious it was still more than I expected. I do think that we spent more, too, because there were so many new and yummy things that we wanted to try.

When we got home I took a nap and then we had a “fend for yourself” dinner night. I decided to try 1/2 c. Pacific Organic roasted red pepper and tomato soup that we bought today and also made a quesadilla that included:
  • 1/4 c. reduced fat cheese
  • 1/4 c. black beans
  • Sauteed onions and peppers

I also had a bottle of diet Steaz orange flavored sparkling green tea which I really didn’t care for. I decided to stop drinking soda almost two months ago so I think that I’m not used to the “bubbly” stuff.

C decided to make a plate of veggies, cheese and the hummus that we also got today. He enjoyed sampling some of the other things that we bought including cashew butter. Oh why didn’t someone tell me how gloriously delicious this stuff is?! I think the worst part is that for a serving size (2 tbs.) it’s FIVE POINTS! I have no idea how I’m going to eat it, but darn it I’m going to find a way, lol!

Oh, I just started eating cashew butter a few months ago! I discovered through bloodwork (read my blog "If you are what you eat, then I'm a big strawberry")that I don't tolerate peanuts nor almonds, and soon thereafter discovered the cashew butter. It's sooooo pricey, though, and you're right about the serving size. Not something I can always buy!

Whole foods can get pretty pricey! Do you have a super target near you? They have a pretty good Organic section at the one near me, and I can usually find reasonably priced produce. Also, I try not to get stuff like Clif bars at whole foods because they are 1.39 there as opposed to publix .99!!

Megan – I so wish we had a Super Target near us, although I would spend a fortune in there too, lol! We usually buy our Clif Bars at Costco or Publix, but they had different flavors that we wanted to try out so we decided to splurge a bit. It certainly does add up though!
