We’re off!

October 14, 2009

Today has been the best day – seriously.  When I arrived at work today I was greeted by a wonderful sign hanging in the 7th grade hallway wishing Hilary and I good luck.  I got the biggest smile on my face!  What a great start to the day!  My friend Meghan, who ran the 18 mile training run with me, came by my room to visit, give me a few encouraging words and drop off a card.  It was so sweet of her!  I also got a card from Brian, who ran the Jacksonville Marine Corps half marathon.

It was early release so we had short classes and there was so much to do that by lunch I was feeling a little overwhelmed!  Hilary and I chatted about the things we still needed to do after school work-wise and trip wise.  I still can’t believe that we are leaving tomorrow!

During 6th period another teacher, Shawn, came by my room and told me that I needed to take my class outside – that I was missing the concert and didn’t I ever check my email?!  I wasn’t sure what was going on, but could hear the drums beating outside so outside we went.  When I got out there Hilary was already outside and the 7th grade band was playing and our students were all cheering for us!  For the past two days (for part of the block periods) Amy had the students make Hilary and I “good luck cards” for our trip!  Since they just started the United States in Geography, Amy decided to start with San Francisco and educate the kids about the city and some of the things that we would be experiencing while we were out there.  So awesome! Amy gave me my stack of cards (there are literally over 100 cards!) and a plastic “winner” medal and I was a bundle of tears.

Look at all the love!

Look at all the love!

Honestly, this little medal means more to me than the actual Tiffany’s necklace and I’m going to put it in my Camelbak when I run on Sunday so when I get frustrated and want to quit (which I’m sure will happen at some point!) I can think of the amazing people I work with and all of my students rooting for me!  I just can’t believe that Amy thought to do something like this and the students totally kept it a secret!  There are pictures of the whole thing, but I’m waiting for the media specialist to send them my way so hopefully when I return I can post them along with my re-cap.  Shawn said some lovely and encouraging words for Hilary and I and then we visited with our students outside as they wished us good luck.  Awww!  I still can’t believe that the entire 7th grade and band with their instruments went right past my room and I didn’t even realize it!  I guess we were pretty involved in the lab that we were doing – haha!

Then this afternoon we had a faculty meeting and our principal called our group up and another teacher gave us awesome little “going away” bags filled with goodies!  It was so thoughtful of them and again I was a bundle of tears.

I truly feel blessed and a little overwhelmed with all of the support everyone has offered us these last few days.  This whole experience has truly changed my life and shown me that I’m capable of much more than I ever imagined – even if the “slow bus” comes to pick me up.

Tonight was my last run before the marathon – just 1 mile.  It felt great to get out some stress (I hate packing!) and I took my time and enjoyed myself.

Last training run!

Last training run!

Tomorrow morning Carl is dropping me off at Kristin’s on his way to work.  Since I’m getting there a bit before the other ladies I’m going to help her with some last minute things and then we are going to make some breakfast.  I can’t wait!

Wow, you are so lucky to have that kind of support at work. You are really blessed. I’ll be thinking about you on Sunday as well as everyone else running it. Who knows, maybe next year I’ll be there too. I want a necklace dang it! Have a ton of fun and take lots of pics.
