Week 29: All Things Baby!

October 24, 2011

How big is baby?

Harper is as long as a butternut squash! Here is what Babycenter.com has to say about her development this week:

Your baby now weighs about 2 1/2 pounds and is a tad over 15 inches long from head to heel. His muscles and lungs are continuing to mature, and his head is growing bigger to make room for his developing brain. To meet his increasing nutritional demands, you’ll need plenty of protein, vitamins C, folic acid, and iron. And because his bones are soaking up lots of calcium, be sure to drink your milk (or find another good source of calcium such as cheese, yogurt, or enriched orange juice). This trimester, about 250 milligrams of calcium are deposited in your baby’s hardening skeleton each day.

Which classes are we taking?

This week we took the first of two classes called “Becoming Parents” . In this class we learned about how to properly bathe, clothe and swaddle our little one. It was a pretty informative class as neither Carl nor I have done any of those things.

We also went on the maternity floor tour. We arrived at the hospital and went in groups of five or six couples up to the maternity floor where we got to see the rooms. At the hospital where I’m delivering everything is done in the same room (labor, delivery, recovery) unless a c-section is performed and then you go down the hall and back to your room. I’m not sure how I feel about doing everything in the room that I’ll be staying in for a few days, but I’m sure the nurses and staff know what they’re doing 🙂 I did get a kick out of the expression on everyone’s faces while we were standing in the room listening to the nurse talk. We all looked like a deer stuck in headlights, “holy crap, this is really happening” kind of look. I’m sure the nursing staff is always amused when the tours go on.

This picture was taken before we went on the tour. Too bad we didn’t take one after so you could see the expression on our faces!
